Work on metro’s first station to begin at Kaloor from Monday

Barricades will be erected on the eastern side of the piling site at the junction, following which Soma Constructions will begin piling. Kaloor is expected to be among the busiest metro stations, because of its proximity to the private bus stand and a host of institutions. Crucial corridors like Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road and Pottakuzhi Road take off from the junction.

Union deadlock remains, Kochi metro piling stalled

Discussions held by the Joint Labour Commissioner on Wednesday to resolve the labour dispute that stalled piling works of the Metro Rail project on the Kaloor stretch remained inconclusive. The conciliatory meeting hit a dead end with the trade unions and Soma Constructions, entrusted with the piling works along the Kaloor-Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium stretch, failed to join hands.

This means that the piling work remained suspended for the third consecutive day in the Kaloor stretch. The deadlock arose after the sub-contractor refused to yield to the demand to raise the number of union workers from 10 to 22 at the casting site. Labour Minister Shibu Baby John had directed Joint Labour Commissioner to organise the meeting after the piling works remained disrupted for two days. The meeting was attended by the officials of Soma Constructions, and leaders of CITU and INTUC.

Soma to go easy on highway project bids

Soma Enterprise Ltd, which has interests in civil construction and highway public private partnerships, has decided to go easy on bidding for highway developments because of regulatory hurdles, among other things, and following the recent termination of contracts by infrastructure companies.

Soma’s managing director Ankineedu Maganti, in an interview, explained how delays in regulatory clearances affect the viability of a project, why the impression that contractors have bitten off more than they can chew is wrong, and the steps the government can take to help developers.

Backed by a buoyant economy growing at more than 8%, investors are chasing highway projects, which promise huge return in the medium and long term. Private equity players such as 3i, ICICI Venture, IDFC and Blackstone are betting big on road sector and plan to either directly partner developers by jointly bidding for the highway projects or pick up stake in the infrastructure firms. PE firm 3i recently took a minority stake in Hyderabad-based engineering and construction company Soma Infrastructure for $101 million. Soma has an order book of more than $1.6 billion and is undertaking various highway projects on build, operate and transfer (BOT) toll basis. With the government planning to allow PE players in the road projects at the time of bidding itself, more companies are likely to infuse fund in the highway projects. Moreover, government is also looking at offering road side land development rights to the developers, making the segment more attractive.
